Two contrasting events stood out for me in the last few days – one, the swanky celebrity marriage, in one of the most expensive locales on this planet, two, the barbaric rape of a five-year-old girl, in Hisar, Haryana. One is still being untiringly discussed, in sharp contrast to the other. The horrific monstrosity of rape, and then the beastly and brutal mauling of the body is a manifestation of a sick mind (a rude reminder of the Dec 2012 incident), and in many ways reflective of a ‘selfie’ society where the focus is on the self while ignoring the rest, unless, of course, the savagery is inflicted on us.
Nothing wrong with having celebrities as our role models. But, is the character of a society built on such role models or is it made of our reactions and responses to the sordid events and the follow up on it (or the lack of it)?
